1st Wonersh Cubs have a blast at SCRAM 2016

SCRAM (74 of 77)

In June the boys from 1st Wonersh Cubs attended the District SCRAM event at the Hook Arena in Epsom.  SCRAM is the County-wide event bringing all of the Packs together for a day of outdoor activities.  Whilst the leadership team ran an event which replicated the Royal Marines’ Field Gun Race, the boys toured the showground to try the many activities on offer.  The activities included Quad bikes, zip wires, zorbing, and inflatable slides – but also many more traditional Scouting activities involving wood crafts and back-woods cooking.  The opportunity was also taken to invest the new County Commissioner – and the boys gave him a proper group welcome.

It was a grey weather day, but thankfully the rain stayed away.  The field was wet when we arrived, and by the end of the day resembled some of the muddier images of Glastonbury.  The boys went home happy, tired and incredibly muddy.

A huge thanks to all of those involved in the organisation and running of the day!

William Garvey – New GSL

On July 24th Wonersh Scouts held our Annual General Meeting and took this opportunity to invest William Garvey as our new GSL (Group Scout Leader).

William is new to the area and new to Scouting which in many ways, makes him an ideal candidate, as he is able to question what we currently do and see everything with fresh eyes. I am sure William’s infectious energy will soon have us all trying new things and pushing the group to new heights.

William has already been very involved with Burger Stalls, Car Parking and Cranleigh Carnival and to all of these, he has brought his whacky sense of humour and a real ‘can do’ attitude.

William’s daughter Chloe has also joined the Beaver Colony recently and we wish both William and Chloe a long and enjoyable relationship with Wonersh Scouts.

Great to have you on board.

(William can be contacted at GSL@1stWonershScouts.org.uk)

Experiment Badge

A huge thank you to the Head of Science, Mr Radwanski and Hamish at Glebelands School for taking the Beavers through an investigation towards their experiment badge. At the end they treated us to a demonstration which was magical!

We would like to appoint a treasurer to keep track of our few financial affairs. There will be a good handover period and plenty of support.

This is a vital role we need to fill to keep Wonersh Scouts up and running. Please ask anyone you think may have the skills to help us.

Many thanks

Cubs Jump Off

We would like to thank all Cubs and their parents for their fantastic support in sponsoring their child for the rope jump off, The British Heart Foundation organised a skipping fundraising event to which the Cub section took part in they also supplied us with all the necessary equipment needed for our sponsored event, as a section we practised skipping over a period of six weeks leading up to the sponsored event, The event was held on the 24th February 2014 at the Scout Hut, we had 21 Cubs taking part in all manners of different skipping activities for example relay racing, skipping on the spot, team skipping this was were the leaders swung the rope and as many Cubs as possible jumped in and skipped one team managed to have a total of 5 Cubs all skipping at the same time all using one rope. After the event the Cubs bought in their sponsorship money and after Akela and Baloo counting the money twice we raised a massive £ 593.00 in total. This event also raised some funds for the Scout Group as we were able to retain 20% of the total amount raised.

On the 31st of March 2014 we invited Mrs West from the British Heart Foundation to receive the cheque for their share of the amount raised. She presented the cubs with British Heart Foundation metal medals and thanked them all for the very hard efforts in raising such a huge amount of money. We then presented the cheque and had a few group photos taken.
